Avoiding SLS: What It Is & Why I’m Avoiding It

What’s the Deal with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)? Why It’s Time to Clean Up Your Routine
Based on a recent poll from my audience, one thing became clear: you want simple, actionable steps for making safer product choices. So here we go, friends. Let’s talk about one of the most common ingredients lurking in our personal care products—Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)—and why it might be time to kick it to the curb.
Why This Matters…
We all want products that are effective and safe, but the reality is that some ingredients just don’t pass the “healthy and safe” test for me. One of the biggest offenders? SLS. This ingredient is everywhere, from shampoos to toothpaste. It’s so common that it’s easy to overlook—but its impact might surprise you.
What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a synthetic detergent and surfactant, which means it helps create that rich, foamy lather we often associate with “clean.” You’ll find it in products like:
- Shampoo
- Body wash
- Toothpaste
- Face cleansers
While that bubbly foam might feel satisfying, SLS can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated. And for those of us with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, it’s even more problematic.
Why You Should Rethink Using SLS…
- Harsh on Skin: SLS can cause dryness, redness, and irritation, especially for people with sensitive or delicate skin.
- Eye Irritation: It’s also known to irritate the eyes when used in face washes or shampoos.
- Environmental Impact: SLS doesn’t break down easily, which means it can linger in the environment and harm aquatic life.
- Safer Alternatives Exist: Plenty of gentler options can still deliver that clean feel without the negative side effects.
Where to Start…
Finding SLS-free products doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are just a few of the safer swaps I’ve found and love:
- Evolvh Hair Care: I’ve tested several, and the Smart Curl line is my favorite. Their Smart Start Detangling Leave-In Conditioner is a game-changer!
- Everyone Nourishing Hand and Body Lotion: The Coconut/Lemon scent is my go-to. Bonus: Their body wash comes in a large size, perfect for the whole family.
- Crunchi Gentle Facial Bar: Great for all skin types. It lathers beautifully without SLS and cleanses while moisturizing.
- Crunchi Charcoal Body Bar: Exfoliates, detoxifies, and moisturizes with an invigorating citrus scent.
The Power of Small, Intentional Steps…
Remember, this is a process-it doesn't have to be 'ALL or NOTHING'. Start by replacing one product at a time. Check your shampoo, toothpaste, or body wash labels and look for “Sodium Lauryl Sulfate” or its cousin, “Sodium Laureth Sulfate.” If you see it, consider switching to an SLS-free option.
Why It’s Worth It…
Avoiding ingredients like SLS might seem like a small step, but every intentional choice adds up—whether it’s for your skin, your health, or the environment. This is a fairly easy product to avoid once you are privy to it!
